Apply in the UK
When can I apply?
You must apply before your current Tier 4 permission expires, and no earlier than 3 months before the course start date on your CAS.
You will need to apply online.
- £475 for a Standard (by post) application (usually decided within 8 weeks)
- £952 for a Priority (by post) application (usually decided within 10 days)
- £1,085 for a Premium (in person) application (usually decided on the same day, but you will need to make an appointment in advance. You will normally receive your plastic Biometric Residence Permit with your new immigration permission in 3-5 working days after your appointment.)
Completing the application form
Read our guidance to help you to register for, and complete the Tier 4 application form inside the UK: Apply to extend your Tier 4 visa in the UK [PDF 870KB]
The following video will help you complete the sections of the visa application form from inside the UK which you may find difficult or do not know how to answer.
Submitting your application
After completing your application, you will be asked how you wish to submit your supporting documents and biometric information. If you select the premium service (in-person), you will be given the option of booking an appointment. During busy periods, appointments may not be available for some time.
To use the priority service, you will need to submit a Tier 4 priority request form.
Standard service by post: send your cover sheet, passport and supporting documents to the address on the cover sheet.
Priority service by post: send your document to the address given in the priority service acceptance email.
We recommend that you send your application via Royal Mail Special Delivery™ so that you can track your application online, see confirmation that it has been delivered and signed for. Special Delivery includes compensation for any loss or damage to your documents.
It is a good idea for you to keep a copy of all the documents which you are sending to UK Visas and Immigration.
Enrol your Biometrics
You will be invited to enrol your biometrics at a participating Post Office after submitting your visa application. You should print your biometric enrolment letter from your online account when you submit your visa application online. You will be able to access the letter by logging into your online visa application form. If you are using the Premium Service you will enrol your biometics at your appointment.
