QM Staff
The Advice and Counselling Service works with staff at QM to support students. Here are some resources aimed at members of staff:
Extenuating circumstances
If you are referring a student to us because they need documentation for Extenuating Circumstances or similar, please read our guidance first:
- Documentation to confirm attendance at the Advice and Counselling Service - information for academic departments and exam boards
- Extenuating Circumstances [PDF 491 KB]- a guide for students

Absences and interruptions
Students may need to take a short leave of absence or consider interrupting their studies. For more information and for links to our student guides on resitting, interrupting or leaving your course see: Guidance for staff writing authorised absence letters
Students in distress
A step by step guide for members of staff who come into contact with students in distress is available to download. This will help you assess how urgent a situation is, what action you need to take and provides contact details of internal and external sources of support.
For a link to the Students in Distress Guide and more information about Queen Mary's Mental Health Coordinator see: Disability and Dyslexia - Mental Health
Staff training and workshops
The Advice and Counselling Service runs a number of workshops during the year to help staff support students. These include Immigration Rules and Working with International Students - the Implications of Culture.
Staff can find more information and book onto courses through the Learning Institute.
We also run Mental Health Awareness workshops, in collaboration with the College's Mental Health Coordinator. These enable staff to develop their understanding of mental health and will provide an opportunity to learn skills and strategies for responding to a variety of situations presented by students.
The workshops are highly flexible and can be tailored to the needs of any department or service within the college. Please contact Rebekah Shaw in the Advice and Counselling Service to discuss your needs: r.o.shaw@qmul.ac.uk
